I originally bought the (old, 4TB ST4000-something or other) storage drive as an upgrade to my main machine at the time, a Thinkpad T450 -- to my dismay it was too thick to fit in the allotted space, and I couldn't return it. So, I elected to build a machine around it -- it started as an ultramodern (at the time) Kaby Lake build that I was buying piece by piece. When the motherboard arrived DOA, and with my idiot self having lost the box in a recent move, I couldn't RMA it, I pitched it and moved to a LGA775 board with a Q9400 as a stopgap. I moved to a AM3+ board, first running an Athlon II x2 240, then a Phenom II x6 1055T overclocked to 3.36GHz, and finally an FX-6300 overclocked to 4.5GHz at 1.48v. When that board died (presumably from VRM abuse, as it wasn't a particularly amazing board to begin with) I elected to make use of an Ivy Bridge CPU I had acquired, the 3570K. It's been a wild ride, but this has been a remarkably capable machine thus far.

What a wild ride this machine's been too. I originally had it hooked into a Logisys PSU for testing -- unaware at the time that Logisys PSUs were good to be recycled only. The board was unstable in operation, installing Windows was like pulling teeth, and it wouldn't dare complete a run of 3DMark2000. Thankfully I shelved rather than trashed the board -- I had planned to display it or something, since it had both AGP Pro 4x and ISA on the same board, but had half a mind to try it again with a competent power supply and thankfully it seems to be perfectly fine.

I bought this thing as a full untested machine -- the case endured some shipping damage and the board was regular ATX, so I just recased it since it still worked. Thankfully it came with the amount of RAM I wanted pre-installed, because ECC EDO SIMMs are rarer than hens' teeth apparently -- doubly so for large-capacity ones.
